One of the planet’s most widely spoken languages, English plays a key role in science, diplomacy and global business. It is also the primary language of the Internet, contributing significantly to its pervasive adoption and accessibility. In spite of all of this however, English can be a very difficult language to learn.
How Popular is English?
Mandarin Chinese has 918 million native speakers, more than any other language. However, with some 1.5 billion users as of 2023—including non-native speakers—English is the most commonly spoken language. In fact, it is used in more than 100 countries, according to the Oxford International Digital Institute. Thus, most of the world has some familiarity with it, and more people are studying the language all the time.
How Old is English?
English is thought to be about 1,400 years old, having evolved from West German dialects into what is considered Old English. Anglo Saxons introduced it into Britain in the middle of the fifth century and the language ultimately evolved into the form with which people are familiar today.

Why English Is a Challenge to Learn
Despite the prevalence of the language, pronunciation variations and complicated grammar rules make English difficult to master. Laden with irregularities and exceptions, English also has broad variances in dialects and accents. Further, because it incorporates a large number of words from other languages, a single word can have a number of variations. Each of these factors compound the challenges non-native speakers encounter when trying to communicate.
Imprecise Vocabulary
Comprised of more than one million words, English is also one of the largest languages on the planet. What’s more, many of its words possess multiple meanings, making it tricky to recognize context. There are also many slang terms, phraseology verbs and idioms.
Pronunciation Issues
Pronunciation rules and tonal language in English spelling make the language complicated too. Words with the same spelling can have multiple pronunciations and identical pronunciations can possess different meanings. What’s more, stressors, accents, and intonation patterns applied to individual words can alter the connotation of a sentence.
Complicated Grammar
English grammar has a multitude of irregular verbs, complicated rules, variations and exceptions. The use of verb tenses, prepositions, and articles can also confound learners.
Spelling Exceptions
Most of the language’s past-tense verbs end in -ed. However, many do not. For example, “children” is the plural of “child,” and “teeth” is the plural of “tooth.” Further, some words have varying spellings and meanings, even when pronounced similarly. Consider “they’re,” “their,” and “there”.
Slang Words and Idioms
Because they frequently employ figurative, rather than literal language, English slang and idioms can also be challenging to learn. Slang also tends to be heavily dependent upon context, and isn’t always listed in traditional dictionaries. Plus, because English slang evolves quickly, staying current on it can be difficult.
In Summary
These are the primary reasons English can be so difficult to learn for non-native speakers. However, because it is so widely employed, opportunities to learn the language are quite prevalent. Further, one needn’t be completely fluent in it to communicate effectively. So, even though English is difficult to learn, employing it on a rudimentary level can be accomplished quite readily.
